The theory that COVID-19 was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theweek.in\/news\/world\/2020\/01\/28\/coronavirus-outbreak-a-result-of-chinese-biological-espionage.html#col_leftparaside_articletopheader\">created in a Chinese lab<\/a> and \u201cleaked\u201d out to the world has been making the rounds since its outbreak in December 2019. President Donald Trump also fired a fresh salvo when he warned China of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theweek.in\/news\/world\/2020\/04\/19\/trump-warns-china-of-consequences-if-found-responsible-for-covid-19.html#col_leftparaside_articletopheader\">consequences if it was \u201cknowingly responsible\u201d<\/a> for the virus. China has refuted these allegations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an interview to a French news channel, Montagnier claimed that the virus, which causes the COVID-19 infection that is wreaking havoc around the world, was the result of an attempt to manufacture a vaccine against HIV in a Chinese lab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Montagnier won the 2008 Nobel Prize for Medicine along with Fran\u00e7oise Barr\u00e9-Sinoussi and Harald zur Hausen for the discovery of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to reports, Montagnier alleged the presence of elements of HIV and germ of malaria in the genome of coronavirus is \u201chighly suspect\u201d and it \u201ccould not have arisen naturally\u201d. The French researcher also alleged an \u201cindustrial accident\u201d to have taken place in the Wuhan National Biosafety Laboratory, which specialises in coronaviruses since the 2000s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, agencies have reported other researchers of rubbishing Montagnier\u2019s claims, saying that it \u201cdoes not make sense\u201d.
